ABSTRACT
The relation between the family history of diabetes mellitus (DM) and the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and its severity is investigated in patients with Type U diabetes. This study comprises the family trees up to the third degree (including) of 364 patients. The diabetic persons in all these three - degree relatives were counted. The incidence of preproliferative + proliferative DR with 10 years or less of duration of DM was significantly higher in patients with number of diabetic relatives 3 and more (p < 0.01). But this difference was not significant in patients with a duration of diabetes more than 10 yrs (p > 0.5). As a result, our findings indicate a genetic component for developing severe DR.
